Calder Birdsey is an architect and designer based in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Middlebury College [2020] with a B.A. in Computer Science and Architectural Design, and the Yale School of Architecture [2025] with an M. Arch I professional degree. He has a specific interest in contextual design methods, adaptive reuse, and cultural preservation through architectural practice. Additionally, he is engaged in ongoing research on the monumentality and heritage of post-industrial landscapes of extraction, specifically related to the mineral economy and open-pit mining. An archaic and primitive understanding of place is fundamental to his conception of architecture and is a continued area of research and curiosity (analoggeography.com).
In 2024, through the George Nelson Fellowship, he conducted research in the Copperbelt region of Zambia and the Estremoz region of Portugal, examining the legacy of mineral extraction as a catalyst for inadvertent landscape monuments at a megalithic scale. This work engaged both the social and political narratives related to site, while also focusing on the documentation of the spatial and architectural qualities of mines, quarries, and adjacent industrial infrastructure.
He is currently an Architectural Designer with aanda, in Brooklyn, New York. He has previously worked for Meier Architects, Alexander Kruhly Architect, the Jim Vlock Building Project, and the Yale Urban Media Project.
